Crude Oil Production

Since the closure of the Larnaca oil refinery in 2004 Cyprus has imported all its oil products. The refinery was transformed into an import terminal and a storage centre.

Since 2008, imports of oil products have declined by 1.7%/year to 2.4 Mt in 2022. Israel accounts for 36% of these imports, followed by Greece (30%) and Italy (19%) (2022).

Renewable in % Electricity Production

The Cyprus Energy Agency is also in charge ofthe development of renewable energies. The 2020 target of a 13% share of renewables in final energy consumption was exceeded, with 16.9%. In 2022, this share reached 19% (17% for electricity, 41.6% for heating and cooling, and 7.2% for transport).

The updated NECP (2023) set a target of 31 to 34% of renewables in final consumption by 2030.

CO2 Fuel Combustion/CO2 Emissions

Cyprus' updated NECP should include a 32% reduction target in GHG emissions by 2030 compared to 2005; according to scenarios highlighted in the draft update (2023), GHG emissions could decline by 23% by 2030. Additional measures should be included in the final NECP by June 2024 to fill the gap.

In 2021, total net GHG emissions reached 8.5 MtCO2-eq, +2.7% compared to the previous year and -6.5% below the 2005 level. GHG emissions decreased by 22% between 2008 and 2013 and have increased until 2017 before stabilising.
